What this machine will and will not work

Wood
Production
This is the machine's core production material. Ply, MDF, particle board, solid hardwood and laminated panel, nested on the vacuum bed and cut with compression spirals: a 12 mm two-flute compression through 18 mm ply at 6 500 mm/min removes 1 404 000 mm3/min and needs 1 404 W at the cutter, which is inside the 2.2 kW spindle with 1.33x to spare. The tool changer means a nest can rough with a 12 mm cutter, finish with a 6 mm, drill shelf holes and V-carve a label without an operator touching the machine. Extraction at the shoe is mandatory, not advisory.
Plastic
Production
HDPE, UHMW, Delrin, nylon, PVC foam board, ABS and glass-filled composite panel all machine cleanly with single- or two-flute O-flutes at 12 000-18 000 rpm and a high chip load - the enemy is heat, and heat comes from a chip that is too thin. Vacuum holds non-porous plastic sheet better than it holds wood, because the sheet itself seals: use the gasket cord in the plenum groove and shut the zones the sheet does not cover. Note that PVC and PVC foam must never be cut with the laser head.
Acrylic
Production
Cast acrylic mills and polishes well with a single-flute O-flute at 18 000 rpm, a 0.15 mm chip load and air blast; the machine's stiffness makes a full-depth 10 mm pass realistic rather than aspirational. Extruded acrylic melts and welds behind the cutter unless the feed stays high, so keep the feed override off it. Do not use water-miscible coolant on acrylic - it crazes stressed sheet. Small acrylic parts hit the vacuum limit quickly, so nest them with onion-skin tabs.
Aluminium
Capable
Real but disciplined. The structure was sized on a 10 mm three-flute in 6061-T6 at 3 mm radial by 12 mm axial, 0.05 mm per tooth at 12 000 rpm, and it holds that cut at 5.5 N per micron of tool-tip stiffness with an adaptive toolpath and a spring pass. Sheet, plate, extrusion and composite panel are all sensible work. It is 'capable' rather than 'production' for three honest reasons: the bed is a wood bed, and aluminium swarf plus MDF dust plus MQL mist is a weekly cleaning job; the 24 000 rpm cartridge is optimised for small cutters, so a 16 mm face mill runs below its comfortable speed range; and vacuum on non-porous plate needs the gasket seal rather than the spoilboard, so aluminium work means a bed changeover. Machines that live on aluminium want flood coolant and a chip tray, and this one has neither.
Steel
Not supported
Not supported with the spindle head. Three independent reasons, any one of which is disqualifying: a steel cut wants 300-800 rpm and 15-40 N.m at the tool, while this cartridge makes 1.75 N.m and has no useful torque below 6 000 rpm; tool-tip stiffness is 5.5 N per micron against the 60-plus a steel cut needs, so the tool would chatter before it cut; and there is no flood coolant, no chip management and no way to keep hot steel swarf out of an MDF spoilboard, a vacuum plenum and a set of 3 m rails. Steel milling on the K-Series is a boxed-column machine's job.
Mild steel
Not supported
Not supported with the spindle head, for the same three reasons as steel - torque, stiffness and swarf - and for one more specific to mild steel: hot-rolled scale is abrasive and would destroy small carbide cutters at the only speeds this spindle is comfortable at. Mild steel sheet *is* supported on this platform, but only on the P variant, where it is cut by a plasma arc and not by a cutter. If the work is MS plate that must be milled rather than cut, this is the wrong machine.
