What this machine will and will not work
| Wood Production | A production material and the reason most of these machines are bought. Poplar and birch ply, MDF, hardwood, veneer, card, cork and leather all cut and engrave. Working figures against a 100 W measured output with air assist: 6 mm poplar ply cuts in one pass at about 900 mm/min, 12 mm at about 300 mm/min, 3 mm MDF at about 1 400 mm/min, and raster engraving runs at the full 12 000 mm/min rapid because a laser has no chip load to respect. MDF cuts but leaves a dark charred edge that no setting removes - that is the resin burning, not a tuning problem. Every one of these cuts is a fire in miniature: air assist on, extraction proved, dross trays empty, operator in the room. |
|---|---|
| Acrylic Production | The material CO2 does better than any other process. **Cast acrylic** cuts with a flame-polished edge that needs no finishing at all - 5 mm in one pass at about 700 mm/min, 10 mm at about 280 mm/min, 15 mm at about 120 mm/min with the 2.0 mm nozzle and the air turned down, because too much air on thick acrylic frosts the edge it is there to polish. Extruded acrylic cuts as well but comes out matt rather than polished, and that is a property of the sheet, not of the machine. Acrylic burns readily and gives off methyl methacrylate vapour, so extraction is proved before the beam is enabled and the machine is not left alone. |
| Plastic Capable | Capable rather than production, because which plastic behaves depends on the polymer and not on the word. Delrin, polypropylene, polyethylene, rubber and foam board cut, though the thermoplastics melt a rounded edge rather than a square one and want high feed and high air. Engraving on most opaque plastics is good. **PVC, PTFE and polycarbonate are absolutely forbidden** - hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride and a charring fire respectively - and so are ABS and any laminate whose backing you cannot identify. The forbidden-materials placard from bag P goes on the door where the sheet is loaded, because that is where the decision is actually made. |
| Aluminium Not supported | Not supported, and no setting changes it. Bare aluminium reflects the overwhelming majority of a 10.6 micron beam and conducts away what little it absorbs, and 100 W raises no melt pool at any feed. Pointing a focused CO2 beam at a polished aluminium surface is also actively dangerous, because the specular reflection leaves the beam path the enclosure was designed around. Anodised, painted and powder-coated aluminium can have its coating ablated to expose the metal underneath, which is coating removal, and Roboda does not publish it as a metal capability because it tells you nothing about what the machine can do to metal. If you want to cut aluminium on this platform, the S variant mills it. |
| Steel Not supported | Not supported. Cutting steel with light needs a kilowatt-class fibre source at 1 064 nm with an oxygen or nitrogen assist jet - two orders of magnitude of power and a wavelength the metal actually absorbs. Marking steel needs the same 1 064 nm source. A 100 W CO2 beam on bare steel produces a warm spot and a reflection. Steel cutting on this platform is the P variant, where a plasma arc does it, and steel marking is not offered on this platform at all. |
| Mild steel Not supported | Not supported, for the same physics as steel and with one extra trap. Mild steel carries mill scale, which is an absorbing oxide layer that will glow convincingly under the beam and give every impression that something is happening. It is the scale heating, not the metal marking, and it wipes off. Neither cutting nor marking mild steel is a capability of this head. Mild steel **is** a production material on this platform, but only on the P variant and only by plasma arc. |
