What this machine will and will not work
| Wood Production | The material this head does best. 3 mm birch ply cuts in one pass at 320 mm/min with air assist; 6 mm birch ply takes 3 passes at 240 mm/min; 10 mm is the practical ceiling and by then the kerf is visibly tapered and heavily charred. Engraving is where a 20 W diode earns its keep: raster photo work at 3 000 mm/min and 0.10 mm line pitch across the full 600 x 420 mm bed, which is a larger engraving area than the machine's own spindle variant can surface in one setup. MDF cuts, but its resin loads the fume with formaldehyde, so extraction is not negotiable. |
|---|---|
| Plastic Light duty | Engraving and thin dark sheet only, and that is the honest rating rather than a cautious one. Dark ABS and dark HDPE up to about 2 mm cut with a melted rather than a sheared edge; natural and light-coloured versions scatter 450 nm and simply will not cut. **PVC and PTFE are absolutely forbidden** - PVC releases hydrogen chloride, which harms the operator and corrodes every steel part on the machine, and PTFE releases hazardous fume when hot. Polycarbonate absorbs 450 nm poorly, chars, yellows and produces an unpleasant fume, so it is on the do-not-cut list as well. If a sheet arrived without a label, it does not go in this machine. |
| Acrylic Light duty | **Dark and opaque cast acrylic only.** 3 mm dark cast cuts in one pass at 220 mm/min and 5 mm in 2 passes at 160 mm/min, with a matte rather than a flame-polished edge - a diode does not give the glassy edge a sealed-tube CO2 source does. Clear, translucent and lightly tinted acrylic transmit 450 nm almost entirely and **cannot be cut at all** by this head; that is a wavelength fact, not a power limit, and it is the single most common disappointment with a blue diode. Engraving clear acrylic needs the surface painted or masked first. Acrylic fume is hazardous, so the extraction requirement applies in full. |
| Aluminium Light duty | Marking only, on a coating, never on the metal. Anodised aluminium marks well at 100 per cent power and 1 500 mm/min in 2 passes, because the beam ablates dye out of the anodic layer and leaves a permanent light mark. Painted and powder-coated aluminium behaves the same way. **Bare aluminium reflects most of 450 nm and is not marked, engraved or cut by this head at any setting** - and a polished bare surface under the beam is a specular hazard that sends power somewhere nobody is looking. For real depth in aluminium, use the spindle variants of this platform. |
| Steel Not supported | Not supported. Steel reflects most of a 450 nm beam and conducts away what it absorbs. 20 W spread over a 0.008 mm2 spot is 2 500 W/mm2, which sounds enormous and is still nowhere near the energy density needed to melt and blow a steel kerf. Marking-compound sprays that claim to bond a mark onto steel with a diode are outside what Roboda will support on this machine: the result is a fused coating, not a mark in the metal, and it is not repeatable enough to publish as a capability. Metal marking in this range belongs to the fibre-source variant of the enclosed platform, and metal cutting to the plasma variants of the large-format platforms. |
| Mild steel Not supported | Mild steel is not supported, for the same physics as steel above and with the same answer. Neither cutting nor marking on bare mild steel is within this head's capability, and mill scale makes it worse rather than better by scattering the beam. Painted mild steel can have its paint ablated, which is a coating-removal operation; it is not published as a mild-steel capability because the substrate underneath is untouched. |
